 As the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) looks forward to the KCCNY’s new home in 2021, we are excited to host the final Open Stage performance series in our beloved space at 460 Park Avenue, NYC.

The Korean Cultural Center New York presents the <2021 Open Stage: “Goodbye 460 Park”> public contest is to provide a platform for artists seeking to promote and globalize Korean culture-inspired performances. Selected performers or performing arts organizations will have the chance to co-host a performance and to be featured as part of the performing arts series lineup in 2021.

Deadline for submission is December 7 (Monday), 2020.

I. Overview

  1. Title : <2021 Open Stage: “Goodbye 460 Park”>

  2. Purpose

    • To provide a platform for talented performers based in the U.S. and to support artists and to invigorate the cultural landscape by offering performance opportunities despite the difficulties faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to promote and spread Korean culture by presenting performances online for the safety of our audience.

  3. Venues

    • Korean Cultural Center New York (for the Filming of the Performance)
      (460 Park Ave., 6 Fl., New York, NY 10022)

    • Website and YouTube channel of the KCCNY (Final Video Online Streaming)

  4. Performance Schedule : March – August, 2021

    • Filming : Mid – Late February, 2021

    • Online Streaming : March – August, 2021 (Exact date will be decided after discussion with selected performers/performing arts organizations)

  5. Application Genre Categories :

    • Music : Korean Traditional Music, Classical Music, Jazz, etc.

    • Dance : Korean Traditional Dance, Contemporary/Modern Dance, Ballet, etc.

    • Theater : Plays, Musical Theater, etc.

    • Multidisciplinary : Mime, Nonverbal Performance, Korean Traditional Folk Theater, etc.

    • K-Pop : K-Pop Cover Dance, K-Pop Cover Vocal, etc.

  6. Performance Running Time : Min. 20min – Max. 40min (No Intermission)

II. Application Requirements

  1. Korean/Korean-American performers or small performing arts organizations* based in the north-eastern regions of the U.S. (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont)

    *Small performing arts organization : 2 – 10 people in total including staff

    • Selected performers/performing arts organizations should be able to physically visit the KCCNY and perform the selected works during mid–late February, 2021 for the filming unless the KCCNY is in any case of force majeure.

    • Also, selected performers/performing arts organizations should be based in one of the north-eastern regions of the U.S. that meets the Covid-19 travel advisories of New York State.

  2. Korean/Korean-American performers or small performing arts organizations who are able to present an existing performance piece that can promote Korean culture, and that which is between 20-40 minutes long in total.

  3. Korean/Korean-American performers or small performing arts organizations who can perform in the KCCNY stage space (33ft x 17ft (approx.10m x 5m))

III. Selection Process and Methods

  1. Total of 6 submissions will be selected.

  2. Process : Initial Application Screening → Application & Submitted Materials Review → Final Discussion

  3. A judge panel formed of specialists in the performing arts industries will review all application materials and evaluate applicants based on a selection criteria

  4. Selection Criteria

    • (40%) Artistry & Competitiveness in the Market

      - Artistic Completeness, Quality Level, and Creativity

      - Audience Interests, Marketability, and Possibility of Future Development

    • (30%) Applicant’s Competence & History of Performances

      - Capability and Reliability to carry out the Performance Plan based on Application Forms

      - History of Performers/Performing Arts Organization

    • (30%) Appropriateness of the Performance

      - Match with the Purpose of <2021 Open Stage: “Goodbye 460 Park”>

      - Possibility to Film and Appropriateness to Stream Online

       

IV. Benefits for Selected Recipients

  1. A stage inside the KCCNY and rehearsal opportunity will be provided.

  2. Filming and editing support to stream online of the performance

  3. Technical support

    ※ Selected performers/performing arts organizations are responsible to prepare any additional equipment needed such as lighting, sound equipment, instruments, costumes, props, etc. other than listed in the Appendix section (KCCNY Equipment List).

  4. Support for advertising and PR for the performance

  5. KCCNY will provide the artist fee (min. $1,000 to max. $8,000) to the selected performers/performing arts organizations after completion of the performance. The artist fee amount will be decided upon in line with the judge panel screening results as well as the size of the performance group.

    ※ KCCNY will not provide any additional fees. Selected performers/performing arts organizations are responsible for any additional expenses/costs for the performance other than listed above.

V. Application Regulations

  1. All performances are presented as a free online streaming program. After the online premiere, the video will be shared and archived on the KCCNY’s online platforms (Website, YouTube, Social Media channels, etc) and will be accessible by the general public. Selected performers/performing arts organizations will sign the copyrights usage contract with the KCCNY separately.

  2. Applicants who intend to fundraise through a benefit event supported by the KCCNY are NOT eligible to apply.

  3. Applicants who intend to obtain an academic degree through a solo recital/dance event supported by the KCCNY are NOT eligible to apply.

  4. Applicants are NOT allowed to change the performer lineup provided in the initial application form.

  5. Should any member of the performance cast or staff be identified as positive for Covid-19 or have fever/symptoms of respiratory illness, you must notify the Program Director of Performing Arts at the KCCNY at least 3 (three) days prior to the filming date. You may reschedule the filming date up to one time; afterwards, the performance will be cancelled.

 

VI. Additional Information

  1. If you have not received a submission confirmation email after entering your application, the Applicant must confirm via phone or other communication method.

  2. The Applicant is responsible for any incomplete documents and the KCCNY will retain all submitted documents and materials that are received. KCCNY is unable to return submitted work samples.

  3. Additional information and documentation may be requested for confirmation of application materials; in the event that submitted content is found to be different from the application, submissions may be impacted or disqualified.

  4. When submitting the application, the Applicant must identify and judge the content of the performance applicable, and submit accurate information and data; and if it is found that any part of the application violates this, the submission may be impacted or disqualified.

  5. If the Applicant (including all the cast and staff members) is found to have a criminal history that caused controversy or any possible reasons for disqualification, the submission may be disqualified.

  6. If the contract is not signed, the selected application may be cancelled; in such case, the next ranked applicant will be decided as the final selection.

  7. Should the final performance be unable to be completed due to reasons on the Applicant’s end, or if the selected work is reduced or changed without prior consultation, or if the contract is not fulfilled, the performance fee may be reduced or not fulfilled.

  8. By submitting this application, the Applicants (including the organization, staff, and cast members) are agreeing that the video filming and recording of the performance itself and any rehearsal(s) may be used by the by the KCCNY for non-commercial purposes only, including, but not limited to reproduction, transmission, distribution. *Note: The selected final Applicants will be required to sign a separate contract regarding these terms.

  9. If applicable, Applicants must acquire the legal rights to perform the musical piece or script and receive any necessary permission for the performance and its online distribution.

 

VII. Application Schedule and Required Documents

  2. Announcement of Results : In January 2021, the KCCNY will notify recipients individually via telephone and/or email
