The 4th Annual Korean Language Writing and Speaking Contest for Non-Koreans

In commemoration of the 568th anniversary of King Sejong's creation of the Korean language and Korean National Hangul Day (October 9th), we are hosting a Korean Language Writing and Speaking Contest on Saturday, October 11th, 2014 to widely spread the excellence and pride of the Korean language and culture to non-Koreans who are studying Hangul. The 4th Annual Korean Language Writing and Speaking Contest will be open for participation for adults and high school students residing in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This edition of the competition will be divided into adult writing and high school writing, as well as a speaking competition section with one grand prize winner, one gold, one silver, and one bronze medalist in each of the sections. They will be awarded a certificate and prize money. Lunch will be provided on the competition day for all contestants.

7. Goal: To celebrate the 568th anniversary of King Sejong’s creation of the Korean language and to further spread the excellence of Korea’s proud culture and language to non-Koreans who are studying Hangul.


8. Participant Requirements:

1) Non-Korean : Adults, graduate school students, undergraduates, and high school students may all participate
2) Speaking Contest participants who have completed two or more years of Korean language study
3) Those who have not won the first prize in the same category of this contest in the past
4) Participants may enter only one area of the contest


9. Prompts: Prompts for the essay (Writing contest ) will be announced at the competition on October 11th and the prompts for the speaking portion are as follows: 

1) My knowledge of Korea
2) The reasons why I like Korean food
3) My observations of Korean people

11. Application Deadline: October 4th, 2014. All participants must submit their Application Forms by this date.

    1 Grand Prize, 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze
  • High School (Writing) - Certificate of Achievement and Scholarship

  • Adult (Speaking) - Certificate of Achievement and Scholarship

13. The grand prize winner of the Adult Writing segment will receive a certificate of achievement issued by the director of the National Institute of Korean Language and books published by the Institute. The grand prize winner of the High School Writing segment will receive a certificate of achievement by the Chairman of the King Sejong Institute. The grand prize winners of the Adult Speaking Contest and High School Speaking Contest will receive a certificate of achievement issued by the Director of the Institute of International Education at Kyung Hee University.
