On May 5th, ESPN began televising the games from the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) for the first time in the US. American sports fans who have been craving long for live-sports due to COVID 19 Pandemic got excited about this news. With this great fanfare towards KBO league, Kurtz, in turn, has become something of a minor celebrity in the sports world.
Kurtz launched and has been operating MyKBO.net, a website dedicated to providing information about the Korean Baseball Organization in English since 2003. When ESPN announced it would broadcast KBO games this May, baseball fans from every continent visited Kurtz's website in record numbers. One the opening night of the KBO this season, Kurtz’s website had 27 times the average traffic, leading to a website crash. Kurtz now has more than 20,000 Twitter followers, taken part in numerous interviews including with ESPN, New York Times, and Fox43.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 K-New Leaders program has returned in virtual format so that everyone can enjoy the talk program safely at home. In this talk, we will explore topics covering the US reactions towards the KBO league and the differences between KBO and MLB. Patrick Nance, who found a strong passion for KBO and has grown in his fandom and expertise of the Korean baseball history, will be moderating the talk.
