Please welcome our new international collaborative project, the “Writing Project”!
National Hangeul Museum, in partnership with Leipzig University Library and Gutenberg Museum in Germany, would like to introduce cultures of writings in the two countries.
We are going to share interesting and informative stories about letters, scripts, typography, printing, and books from the three institutions.
As the beginning of the project, National Hangeul Museum presents ‘Hangeul, Encompassing the Sounds of the World’.
Explore the origin of letters and discover Hangeul as a phonogram.

세계의 문자문화를 한 자리에 모아보는 “문자 프로젝트”에서는 그 두 번째 순서로 ‘백성을 가르치는 소리, 훈민정음’을 선보입니다. 백성을 위한 새로운 문자 해설서 『훈민정음 해례본』에 담긴 훈민정음의 의미를 살펴보세요.
* “문자 프로젝트”는 국립한글박물관과 독일 라이프치히대학도서관 및 구텐베르크박물관의 협력 프로젝트로, 양국 문자문화와 관련된 다양한 이야기를 소개해드리고자 기획되었습니다.
** ‘어제 예의’에 표기된 한자어 예시는 모두 현대 한국어로 발음되었으며, 국제음성기호(IPA)에 따라 표기되었습니다.
Until the mid-fifteenth century, Korean language had no native script. While the ruling class used Classical Chinese to write their thoughts and words that would have been spoken in Korean, it was too difficult for the general populace to learn and use them freely. Feeling sorry for the masses, King Sejong devised a new script called Hunminjeongeum in 1443. In 1446, a book titled “Hunminjeongeum”, also known as “Hunminjeongeum Haerye”, was published to give detailed explanations and examples of the new script. Thanks to the new 28 letters, people could easily learn how to write and express their thoughts and feelings in writing.
The second video clip for the “Writing Project” is ‘Hunminjeongeum, the correct sounds for educating people’. By introducing several important sentences from the book, it explains philosophical background of the new script and shows how the usage was explained to the general people.
* The “Writing Project” is organised in partnership with Leipzig University Library and Gutenberg Museum in Germany to share interesting and informative stories about cultures of writings in the two countries.
** All Classical Chinese characters used to explain the pronunciation of Hunminjeongeum in the ‘Definitions’ section of “Hunminjeongeum” are pronounced in modern Korean, and are written in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
