The Coachman was the first Korean film to win a major international award, the Silver Bear, from the 1961 Berlin International Film Festival. The Coachman tells the tale of a single father (Seung-ho Kim), who makes ends meet operating a horse-drawn cart. This movie takes place at the time when Korea was rapidly developing in the wake of the Korean War; with modernization and the advent of the automobile threatening to condemn the coachman to obsolescence.
