Jang Sun-woo, 108 minutes

Korean Film Screening & Discussion: Hwaomkyung (Passage to Buddha)

Based on the novel Hwaomkyung written by GO Eun, this film is one of JANG Sun-woo’s best works and is quiet and evocatively beautiful meditation on life.

A young boy mourns the death of his father and begins a quest to find his mother. He encounters many people on the way who quote Buddhist precepts: and eccentric monk, a girl who grows up into a young woman, a prison inmate, a foul-mouthed doctor and the young son of a hard drinking astronomer. Each of them tells the boy to seek someone to help him find the truth and his mother. This film won the Alfred Bauer Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1994. JANG has directed A Petal (1996), Lies (1999), and Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002).

Guest Speaker Ms. Hyun-Ock Im will introduce the program and lead a discussion after the screening.
