The 11th New York Asian Film Festival

June 29 – July 15, 2012

Lincoln Center, NYC
By Subway Cinema and The Film Society of Lincoln Center

America’s biggest festival of popular Asian film will showcase over 50 feature films and three programs of short films from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.

There will be many guest appearances; including filmmaker Will Yun Lee and the creative team behind Square Enix’s upcoming Hong Kong cinema-inspired video game Sleeping Dogs. The team will be putting on a back-to-back, 10th anniversary screening of Infernal Affairs 1 & 2.

The New York Asian Film Festival is North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema, which the New York Times has called "...one of the city's most valuable events...". Launched in 2002 by Subway Cinema, the Festival selects only the best, strangest, and most entertaining movies to screen for New York audiences, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon-Ho, Park Chan-Wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. The Festival has been produced in collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 2010.

Special Events

Choi Min-Sik: Mr. Vengeance
Choi Min-Sik, a revered Korean Star, shot to fame for his performance as a North Korean terrorist in Shiri – the first blockbuster of the new Korean cinema. He then went on to further capture the attention of international audiences with his crazed hammer wielding performance as Oh Dae-Su in Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy. In 2006, he quit moviemaking to protest American pressure on the Korean film industry, but made a triumphant return a few years later with Kim Ji-Woon’s I Saw the Devil. Presented in association with the Korean Cultural Service New York, NYAFF will present a series of new and classic Choi Min-Sik performances to honor the man himself.

Chung Chang-Wha to receive 2012 Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award:

NYAFF will honor Chung Chang-Wha with the 2012 Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award. Chung Chang-Wha, the director of King Boxer (Five Fingers of Death) – one of the most influential martial arts movies of all time, started his career in Korea where he basically invented the modern day Korean action film. His movies earned him a Shaw Brothers contract and his Five Fingers of Death was the first martial arts movie to cross over to the West, paving the way for Bruce Lee and setting the tone for the hundreds of kung fu films to follow.
