Korean Cultural Center New York announces a special film screening:

“Sports. Emotion. Connected.” to celebrate D-200 until the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Korean Cultural Center New York, a branch of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) of the Republic of Korea, is proud to announce a series of films under the theme of “Sports. Emotion. Connected.” in preparation of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The series will include four distinct Korean films (Take Off, As One, 4th Place, and Marathon) all centered around the passion and heart behind sports. With a wide range of plot lines and emotional charge, these specially curated films aim to represent the individual strength and sacrifice that is behind each and every athlete, ultimately humanizing these individuals into more than just winners and losers.

In line with the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics official theme of “Passion. Connected,” the film screening aims to be a source of emotion and togetherness that can be felt by all audiences. Please join us for two special days of free movie screenings to celebrate D-200 countdown until the Winter Olympics!

Seats are provided on a first come, first served basis. RSVPs are NOT required.

PyeongChang Experience Zone

In special addition, the Special Screening will be host to the first “PyeongChang Experience Zone” by the Korean Cultural Center New York created in an efforts to promote the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics to begin in February of 2018 in Korea.

Experience Zones are being installed worldwide at various cultural events to encourage visitors to enjoy the upcoming Olympics through interactive previews and hands-on experiences.

At KCCNY's first Experience Zone, guests are invited to take photos with the official mascots, Soohorang and Bandabi, as well as to experience PyeongChang in VR through the ski jump and PyeongChang sightseeing programs. The booth will be open before and between the film screenings on both days.

The power of sport as a means of unification is flawlessly illustrated in director MUN Hyeon-seong’s dramatic retelling of the historical story of the first-ever post-war Unified Korea sports team assembled to compete at the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships. Created to symbolize a form of truce, the team is combined of both North and South Korean women under a new aegis of “Korea”. These players, once relentless opponents, are now forced to forget their past and swallow their own ambitions in order to become a team and chase after a victory that holds more weight and meaning than ever before.

Based on the true story of an autistic marathon runner, Marathon follows the relationship between Cho-won, an autistic boy who develops passion and solace in long-distance running, and Kyong-sook, his highly protective and supportive mother. At its core, the film is a traditional underdog story but with it’s honest approach to autism and highly inspirational story, Marathon still manages to deliver a meaningful message through the depiction of each character’s uplifting highs and dramatic lows.

With beautifully artistic scenes intertwined in between raw shots of an abusive coach, the film embraces sport not just as a physical endurance but also as an emotional and mental race against oneself.
