Film Synopsis
"Jib Bap" is a personal journey into the heart of traditional Korean home-cooked meals, exploring the deep connection between food, culture, and identity. The film reflects on a unique upbringing, split between Korea, England, and New York, and how this experience shaped an appreciation for authentic Korean cuisine.
The documentary highlights the significance of Korea's three key fermented sauces—Doenjang, Ganjang, and Gochujang—and the personal touch each family brings to their meals. In contrast to mass-produced flavors, the focus is on preserving tradition through fresh, seasonal ingredients.
As a Korean-American, the storyteller shares a sense of cultural in-betweenness, using cooking as a way to convey this journey. "Jib Bap" invites viewers to experience the true essence of Korean cuisine, offering a taste of the countryside's rich, authentic flavors beyond the typical Koreatown fare.
◆ Director & Producer: Shanghoon
Shanghoon, the filmmaker behind "Jib Bap," is a Korean-Canadian whose life between Korea and Canada has deeply influenced his storytelling. "Jib Bap" is a personal project for him, using the film to explore Korean home-cooked meals and their cultural significance. In making the film, Shanghoon thoroughly researched and interviewed Chef Hooni Kim, focusing on the unique fermentation techniques central to Korea's culinary heritage. He aimed to convey the emotional and cultural depth of the meals at Hooni Kim’s restaurant, highlighting how these dishes nourish both body and soul. Through intimate interviews, captivating visuals, and thoughtful narration, Shanghoon contrasts the richness of traditional Korean cooking with the uniform flavors of modern restaurants, immersing viewers in the essence of Hooni Kim’s culinary journey. His dedication to authenticity is evident throughout "Jib Bap," as he seeks to preserve and share Korea’s vibrant home-cooking traditions with a wider audience.
