Poetry

October 7 -October 11, 2002

Gallery Korea at the Korean Cultural Center New York
(460 Park Ave. 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022)

Gallery Korea is pleased to announce Poetry, an exhibition, featuring the work of two poets and one visual artist. The poetry of Kyung Ja Yang (Lee) and Kyung Hwang (Min) will be presented within framed, digital images produced by Wonhwa Hong.
This exciting collaboration involved each artist giving 10 poems to Ms. Hong who then incorporated the short verse into a variety of dream-like pictorial spaces. The poems float within and against a variety of compositions that are embellished with natural forms and abstract imagery. In several images the lines appear to roll around the space and this subtle visual device achieves a powerful narrative effect akin to the rhythm of the spoken word. In others, variations on an idiosyncratic typeface illuminate the romantic and emotional tone of the poems.

Kyung Ja Yang won the “Sound of Poetry” at the International Library of Poetry in 1999. She received the “International Poet of Merit Award” from the International Society of Poets in 2002. Her poems were included in “Best Poem and Poet” in 2001 and 2002 and selected for the book “Letters from the Soul” in 2002. Kyung Hwang has been honored with several awards, including the “Prometheus Muse of Fire” trophy and the “Poet of the Year Medallion” in 2002. Wonhwa Hong received Graduate Degrees from Hong-Ik University and the School of Visual arts in New York. She has exhibited her paintings and more recently her digital art in galleries and museums in the United States and Korea.

The poets will celebrate the publication of the books I wish to be a star by Kyung Ja Yang and I wish to remain as you are by Kyung Hwang at a reception on Monday, October 7 from 6 - 8 pm.
