About Jayu
This group takes its name from a Korean word which in English means freedom. The vision of this ensemble is to fuse Jazz with Asian folk music. Most of the materials are original, having been composed or arranged by band members or commissioned specifically for Jayu. This New York City-based group features Violin and Cello in a Jazz setting, with Piano and Drums. The members pull from their diverse musical and personal backgrounds to create a unique, exciting sound. Members include leader and Cellist Heun Choi, Pianist Francesca Jiyoun Han, Violinist Mark Chung, and Drummer Joe Hertenstein.
About the Leader
Cellist Heun Choi was born and raised in Korea, where she displayed an early talent for classical music. She came to the U.S. in 2001 to study Jazz, and since then has formed several groups and performed throughout New York City, garnering attention for playing Jazz on an instrument unique to this genre. Most recently she won an individual Artist Award from Queens Council on the Arts for her work. She plans to record Jayu and tour in the U.S. and Korea. Choi lives in Woodside, Queens with her husband, musician Jeff Fairbanks, and their newborn son, Teo.
