The Voice of Korean Soul: Jang sa-ik
Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 7:30pm
New York City Center (West 55th Street btw 6th & 7th Avenues, NYC)
One of Korea's most popular artists, Jang Sa-ik combines pop, jazz and Korean traditional music in this powerful performance. His voice and singing style has been compared to doenjang, the hot and spicy soybean paste that is an essential part of Korean cuisine. His repertoire includes his own musical compositions which are inspired by kukak (Korean folk songs) and use lyrics from traditional and contemporary Korean poetry. He is joined by musicians on Korean percussion, haegeum (fiddle), guitar, bass, piano, trumpet and drums, and a six-member male vocal choir to support his rich harmonic arrangements.
Presented in association with the World Music Institute.
