The Covenant Journey is the first all-English musical made in Korea with the intention of targeting overseas stages outside of Korea. All of its lyrics and scripts are written in English, and the musical aims for native English speaking audiences, which is a quite different approach than any other Korean musicals. For this year’s performance, English speaking Korean actors, 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean-Americans, and U.S. born Americans have been casted through auditions in LA and New York. The Covenant Journey is appraised as displaying a new model for musicals in Korea.

The musical is based on the story of Joseph in the Bible, a story-line that any audience regardless of national origin can relate to, along with the life of Karyn, a teenage girl who lives in pain and hurt from her father who is an Iraq war veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and from the loss of her mother at a young age. The show goes on as Karyn, an at-risk youth struggling from drugs and depression, finds a way through her troubles by hearing the story of Joseph’s journey.

The Covenant Journey also consists of superb music along with exquisite views brightening the stage. Almost 80 actors and staff, over 200 colorful costumes, a live-orchestra of 17 instrumentalists, and stage lighting displaying the best of Korean performance technology are in preparation to impress the Broadway professionals and theater-going audience.
