INDIANPOLIS GOLD MEDALIST MAKES MAY 4 CARNEGIE HALL DEBUT

Clara-Jumi Kang, Gold Medal winner of The 2010 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis makes her Carnegie Hall debut in Stern Auditorium on Friday, May 4 at 8:00 p.m. She will be joined by pianist Yeol eum Son, herself a winner of the Silver Medal of the 2009 Cliburn Piano Competition.

Ms. Kang, a German of Korean origin, was born in Mannheim in 1987. In addition to capturing the first prize in Indianapolis, she won five additional special prizes and the use of the 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivari for four years. This has been a busy season with orchestra and recital appearances in Europe, Asia, and North America, including the Staatskapelle Dresden. Decca is scheduled to release a CD “Modern Solo – Virtuoso Music for Violin” in June.

Ms. Kang started violin and piano lessons at the age of three and entered the Mannheim Musikhochshule at the age of four studying with Valerie Gradov. The following year, she moved to Lubeck to study under Zakhar Bron and gave her debut with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. At the age of seven, she auditioned at The Juilliard School where she was accepted with a full scholarship and studied with renowned pedagogue Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang. Ms. Kang gave her debut concert in Korea at the age of eight performing with the Korean Chamber Ensemble at the Seoul Arts Center. Since that time, she has performed with all the major Korean orchestras including the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Buchon and Gyeonggi philharmonics. This past summer she was a guest artist at the Great Mountains International Music Festival in Gangwon Province. In Europe, she has performed with the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Nice Philharmonic orchestras.

Her numerous prizes in international competitions besides her triumph in Indianapolis include First Prize at the 2010 Sendai International Violin Competition, Second Prize at the 2009 Hannover International Violin Competition, and First Prize at the 2009 Seoul International Violin Competition. Ms. Kang completed her studies with the Nam Yun Kim at the Korean National University of Arts and now lives in Munich.
