Korean Cultural Center New York (2018 Open Stage: Samulnori)_ Closed
The Korean Cultural Center New York presents <2018 Open Stage: Samulnori> public contest to provide a platform for artists seeking to reinterpret, localize, and globalize Korean Samulnori inspired performances that exemplify the highest tier of both traditional and contemporary/fusion works in the celebration of 40 years of Samulnori.
Selected performers/performing arts organizations will have the chance to co-host the event and to be featured in one performing arts series at one of the performing arts venues, schools, or public spaces in the north-eastern regions of the U.S. in 2018.
Deadline for submission is November 27 (Monday), 2017

I. Overview
- Title : <2018 Open Stage: Samulnori>
- Purpose : To provide a platform for performers and artists to reinvigorate Korean traditional performing arts by reinterpreting, localizing, and globalizing Korean Samulnori and in turn, to take part in the performing arts and world music scene in the celebration of 40 years of Samulnori
- Performance Schedule : Exact performance dates (between February – December 2018) will be decided after discussion with selected performers/performing arts organizations
- Performance Venues : One of the performing arts venues, schools, or public spaces in the north-eastern regions of the U.S.
- Application Genre : Korean traditional/contemporary/fusion performances with its roots in, or inspired by Samulnori (Performance must include an aspect that can introduce Samulnori to the audience)
II. Application Requirements & Regulations
- Performance Schedule : Exact performance dates (between February – December 2018) will be decided after discussion with selected performers/performing arts organizations
- Performance Venues : One of the performing arts venues, schools, or public spaces in the north-eastern regions of the U.S.
- The north-eastern regions of the U.S. include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont
- Applicants must rent the venue/space where they wish to perform in advance prior to submitting the application. Should the rental/reservation in advance not be available, applicants should indicate the name of the desired venue/space in the application form and reserve/rent the space at least one month before the actual performance date.
- Applicants must reserve or rent a venue/space where the seating capacity is at least 50 people
- Applicants cannot perform at the Korean Cultural Center New York
- Application Genre/Programs : Korean traditional/contemporary/fusion performances with its roots in, or inspired by, Samulnori
- Applicants can organize the performance programs in any format; however, selected applicants must either distribute program book(s)/playbill(s) that include an introduction of Samulnori and Korean traditional instruments and/or introduce/provide an explanation of Samulnori during the performance through verbal announcement, video projection, or other creative means
- Please note: Preference will be given to applicants who are able to organize additional educational programs with the performance (such as hands-on workshops, pre/post-lectures, or a symposium regarding Samulnori.
- One performance per performer/performing arts organization is allowed, and the total running time should be at least 40 minutes.
- Ticket Price : Please select Options #1 or #2
- Free performance and open to the general public
- Ticket-selling performance (If selected, all the ticketing-related procedures, management, and profits must not have any association with the Korean Cultural Center New York)
- Target Audience : The total number of audience should be at least 50, preferably consisting of a those of diverse backgrounds who are not familiar with Samulnori and/or Korean culture
- If applicable, applicants must acquire the legal rights to perform the script/musical/piece or any necessary permissions and permits for the performance.
- For continued support in providing performance opportunities to performers and performing arts organizations through the Open Stage program, Korean Cultural Center New York has the following eligibility regulations:
- Applicants who intend to fundraise through a benefit event supported by <2018 Open Stage: Samulnori> are NOT eligible
- Applicants who were selected as a recipient in the 2015-2016 and 2017 seasons are NOT eligible to re-apply for <2018 Open Stage: Samulnori >
III. Selection Process and Methods
- A judge panel formed of specialists in the performing arts/music industries will review all application materials and evaluate applicants based on the selection criteria
- Selection Criteria
- Artistry and Audience Interests (Artistic Completeness, Marketability, Quality, and Creativity)
- Applicant’s Competence (Performance History, Capability for International Exchange, Reliability to carry out the Performance, and Possibility for Future Development)
- Requisite Requirements (Venue Preparation, Total Expected Number of Audience, Ability to incorporate Samulnori and its introduction in the Program)
IV. Benefits for Selected Recipients
- Support for advertising and PR for the performance including multiple PR components
- The Korean Cultural Center New York will provide an artist fee (min. $1,500 to max. $8,000) to the selected performers/performing arts organizations after completion of the performance. The artist fee amount will be decided upon the panel screening results as well as the size of performance group, venue rental price, additional educational programs, etc.
*If the performance venue/space requires insurance, selected performers/performing arts organizations must provide all appropriate insurance
*Korean Cultural Center New York will not sponsor U.S. Visas for the performers or provide funds for production expenses including venue or space rentals and insurances, general administrative and operation expenses, labor costs, flights, hotels, meals, transportations, and studio rentals for extra rehearsals
V. Application Schedule and Required Documents
- Application Deadline: November 27 (Monday), 2017 (EDT)
- Announcement of Results: In the middle of December 2017, the Korean Cultural Center New York will notify recipients individually via telephone and/or email
- Documents and Materials for Submission: The application must be filled out in the prescribed format. Please download the form from the Korean Cultural Center New York’s website
- Required: completed application form (download it at www.koreanculture.org)
- Required: photos of the performers/performing arts organization and/or photos of performances
- Required: work sample links (video, audio, etc)
- Optional : Other materials if applicable

*Korean Cultural Center New York does not accept any post mail or in-person submissions
VI. Additional Information
- The Korean Cultural Center New York will retain all submitted documents and materials that are received. KCCNY is unable to return submitted work samples. Also, if any false information is found during the selection process, the application will be disqualified
- If any law infringement and/or violation occurs, the application process or performance will be suspended immediately, and the artist fee must be returned to the KCCNY
