The Korean Cultural Service New York presents an opportunity for talented performers/performing arts organizations to present their works in New York City through the <2015-2016 Open Stage> public contest. Selected performers/performing arts organizations will have the chance to co-host the event and to be featured in one performing arts series at the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Service New York, at the Theatre of the Flushing Town Hall, or at the La MaMa Theatre during the 2015-2016 season. Deadline for submission is 5PM, July 10 (Friday), 2015. Please review the guidelines carefully before completing the application form.

I. Overview

Title : 2015-2016 Open Stage
Purpose : To support the revitalization of the creative arts through offering performance opportunities to talented performers/performing arts organizations
Performance Venues :
- Applicants (except for those applying to the Dance genre) can choose A and/or B)
  A) Korean Cultural Service NY (460 Park Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022)
  B) Flushing Town Hall (137-35 Northern Blvd., Flushing, NY 11354)
- DANCE genre applicants can choose C and/or D
  C) Korean Cultural Service NY (460 Park Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022)
  D) La MaMa Theatre (66 East 4th Street, New York, NY 10003)
Performance Schedule
- Korean Cultural Service NY
  • Exact performance dates (between October 2015 – June 2016) will be decided after discussion with selected performers/performing arts organizations
  • All performances start at 7 PM
- Flushing Town Hall
  • Exact performance dates (between October – December 2015 ; February – April 2016) will be decided after discussion with the Flushing Town Hall and selected performers/performing arts organizations
  • All performances start at 8 PM
- La MaMa Theatre
  • The Exact performance date (in May 2016) and the performance space will be decided after discussion with the La MaMa Theatre and the selected performer/performing arts organization
  • The Performance starts at 8 PM

II. Application Genre Categories

Music : Korean Traditional Music, Classical Music, Jazz, etc.
Dance : Korean Traditional Dance, Contemporary/Modern Dance, Ballet, etc.
Theater : Plays, Musical Theater, etc.
Multidisciplinary : Mime, Nonverbal Performance, Korean Traditional Folk Theater, etc.

III. Application Requirements & Regulations

All applicants should meet at least one of the two following conditions:
- Applicants should include at least one Korean or Korean-American artist
- Applicants should perform a work that includes a Korean cultural component
All performances are FREE and open to the general public
One performance per performer/performing arts organization
The length of the entire performance must not exceed two hours (including intermission)
If applicable, Applicants must acquire the legal rights to perform the script/musical piece or receive any necessary permission for the performance
For continued support in providing performance opportunities to performers/performing arts organizations through the Open Stage program, Korean Cultural Service New York has the following eligibility regulations:
• Applicants who intend to fundraise through a benefit event supported by 2015-2016 Open Stage are NOT eligible
• Applicants who are NOT selected as a recipient for the 2015-2016 season are eligible to re-apply for Open Stage the following year
• Applicants who are selected as a recipient in 2015-2016 are NOT eligible to re-apply for Open Stage for the following two years
• Applicants who were selected as a recipient in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons are NOT eligible to re-apply for Open Stage 2015-2016

IV. Selection Process and Methods

A judge panel formed of specialists in the performing arts industries will review all application materials and evaluate applicants based on a selection criteria
The panel holds the right to make the final decision of the performance venue for each selected performer/performing arts organizations based on the selected criteria

V. Benefits for Selected Recipients

A stage will be provided for the performance at the Gallery Korea of the Korean Cultural Service NY, the Theatre at the Flushing Town Hall, or the La MaMa Theatre

Support for advertising and PR for the performance including multiple PR components
A section in the 2015-2016 Open Stage Program Book
The Korean Cultural Service New York will provide a small artist fee to the selected performers/performing arts organizations after completion of the performance
Rehearsal space
- Korean Cultural Service NY
  • Before the performance date, one rehearsal opportunity is available from 6-9 PM
  • On the performance day, rehearsal space is available from 6-7 PM.
- Flushing Town Hall
  • On the performance day, rehearsal space will be available from 9 AM until 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance
- La MaMa Theatre
  • On the performance day, rehearsal space will be available from 9 AM until 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance
Reception will be provided for the audiences
• Korean Cultural Service New York will provide refreshments for each performance

*Korean Cultural Service New York, Flushing Town Hall, and La MaMa Theatre will not sponsor U.S. Visas for the performers or provide funds for the expenses of hotels, meals, transportation, and studio rentals for extra rehearsals.

VI. Application Schedule and Required Documents

Application Deadline: 5 PM, July 10 (Friday), 2015
Announcement of Results : By August 2015, the Korean Cultural Service New York will notify recipients individually via telephone and/or email
Documents and Materials for Submission: The application must be filled out in the prescribed format. Please download the form from the Korean Cultural Service New York’s website
• Required: 5 (Five) completed application forms
• Required: Work Samples (Video, Audio, Photos, Scripts, etc)
(If this performance is a premiere, you must submit work samples of your past production/performances)
• Optional : Other materials if applicable

VII. Additional Information

Performance space and dates are subject to change depending on the final results of the public contest
The Korean Cultural Service New York will retain all submitted documents and materials that are received. KCSNY is unable to return submitted work samples
