The Brooklyn International Music Festival, which takes place entirely at the Jalopy Theatre, is a two-day celebration of the music and culture of the diverse ethnic communities of New York City. Through dance, music, workshops, and lectures, this festival presents an array of international and diasporic musical traditions extant in NYC and how they are sustained and evolve within the immigrant communities of the city. It seeks to highlight the pancultural experience of how musical traditions are maintained outside their homelands in NYC.

This year, the festival will present Iraqi maqam, Georgian harmonies, Korean percussion, Haitian Folk, traditional Chinese music, Son Huasteca, Guinean Afro-Jazz, and more!

  • Traditional Korean Drumming Workshop by Vong Pak at 5 PM

Korean drumming, aka Pungmul or Samulnori, has been developed from agricultural society of Korea. Traditionally, Korean use drumming to encourage labor force, to unify community, and to celebrate their ritual. Vong Pak’s Korean Drum Workshop still carries the Korean drum spirit, and it focuses to engage with our New York neighborhood. Music is fun! Music is a language and strong communication tool! We listen each other, know each other, and encourage each other in the Korean drum circle! The workshop is open for every ethnic, religion, and gender and politic. The workshop is for the fundamental and practical technique for beginner. Each participant will learn basic theory of Pungmul and Korean percussive instruments, such as Janggu (hour glass shaped drum), Jing (large gong), Kwenggari (small gong), and buck (barrel drum).
