A self-unfolding gut ritual—where the vibrations of connection pulse between relationships. Like untangling knotted threads, it is a raw outcry, a confession, an embrace, and an act of endurance, embodied through the body. Instinctive energy and spontaneous forms intertwine, weaving an ever-evolving tapestry of encounters that shape our lives.

CHUM, KU SHINMYUNG (18 min)
Rooted in the traditional Korean concept of Shinmyung, this piece embodies ecstatic joy and emotional release through dance. Shinmyung transforms deep emotions—especially the sorrow of Han (한, 恨)—into a powerful, communal energy of liberation.

At its core, the performance captures the purest artistic expression of joy and beauty, where seemingly simple movements reveal profound depth. Tension and release unfold through dynamic sound—not as a force of destruction, but as an energy deeply woven into the people, shaped by both joy and sorrow. Here, dance becomes the ultimate manifestation of Shinmyung, breaking free from the weight of Han and elevating it into a moment of transcendence and freedom.

▲ ChangMu Dance Company

The ChangMu Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Kim MaeJa, was founded in December 1976 for the dual purpose of reconstructing dance movement representative of the various periods of Korean history and of creating new movements and formats that reflect the thought and lifestyle of our contemporary world. In the years since its establishment, ChangMu troupe has initiated a transformation of Korean dance through innovative choreography that introduces new dance vocabularies and creative combinations of dance movement with poetry and painting. This has stimulated a revitalization of creativity in Korean dance, enriching its resources with new idioms of movement and form. Yet all of this creativity and innovation is based firmly on the solid foundation of the troupe's mastery of all aspects of traditional Korean dance, including shaman dance, Buddhist dance, folk dance, and court dance.

The ChangMu dancers have introduced the world to the spirit and artistry of Korean dance at many world venues and events, touring 100 cities in 20 countries during the past 35 years. Places where they have performed include the Deutsch Opera Berlin, the Cairo Opera House, Kremlin Congress Hall, and the Kirov Theatre, plus the Lyon Dance Biennale and other world festivals

* This program is presented by the Korean Cultural Center New York and is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea and the KOFICE (Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange) as part of the "Touring K-Arts" project.
