The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) is delighted to announce a special meditation talk entitled "2024 Korea-U.S. Traditional Buddhist Cultural Exchange: Peace of Mind, Peace of the World," featuring Venerable Jinwoo, the President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a renowned meditation teacher and also is considered by many to be the 'godfather of modern mindfulness,' co-presented by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

In the midst of economic disparity, environmental crises, and intensifying socio-political conflicts, we find ourselves living in an era filled with confusion and uncertainty. We are honored to invite most Venerable Jinwoo and Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn to a Seon meditation lecture.  During this exclusive event, we hope that their insight would help you to achieve peace of mind through meditation and contribute to world peace.

About the Lecturers

Venerable Jinwoo

The 37th President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Most Ven. Jinwoo was initiated into the monastic sangha by the renowned scholar-monk Master Baekun. He received sramanera (novice monk) ordination in 1978 from Ven. Gwaneung and full precepts from Ven. Cheongha in 1998. He immersed himself in intense Seon meditation practice by joining the retreats at CheongryangSeon Center at Sangwon-sa Temple in Mt. Odae and MongseongSeon Center at Yongheung-sa Temple in Damyang. He was the abbot for Sinheung-sa Temple in Wando, Yongheung-sa Temple, and Baekyang-sa Temple of Gobul Lineage in Jangseong.

Before being elected as the 37th president of the Jogye Order and sworn in on Sep. 28, 2022, he served as a member of the Appeal’s Tribunals, acting president, CEO of the Buddhist Daily, and the 8th head of the Education Bureau.

He has been devoting every moment of his life to Buddhist practice, firmly believing that “Buddhism exists to teach people how to rest in the original state of mind that is infinitely spacious and calm, no matter what condition they encounter in life.” Starting each day with 108 bows at dawn, Most Ven. Jinwoo maintains an open online communication channel with the public, imparting wisdom as clear and sweet as dewdrops to teach people how to overcome fear and achieve freedom in life.

The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism

In 1955, the Jogye Order was firmly reestablished as a celibate order. On April 11, 1962, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism was officially established with three main goals: to train and educate, to translate sutras from traditional Chinese into modern Korean, and to propagate the dharma. And between 1947 and 1949, a group of monks organized a reform movement at Bongamsa Temple advocating “Living According to the Teachings of the Buddha.” This provided an opportunity for establishing the fundamental principles and traditions of the Jogye Order, as well as officially sanctioned ceremonies.
