Experiencing with Korean Music

Dr. Ju-Yong Ha

Free Admission: RSVP at (212) 759-9550

The lecture concert by Dr. Ju-Yong Ha will provide an overview of Korean folk music traditions and their socio-cultural background. Most of the Korean folk music genres are known to have a direct connection to Korean indigenous religion, shamanism. Among those genres pansori (story-telling Korean folk opera), sanjo (instrumental improvisational solo) and pungmulnori (farmer’s percussion band) will be explored along with live performance demonstrations. The lecture will also offer further development of Korean traditional music in current stage, introducing the modern trends and musical activities focusing on some of the most popular repertoires of “fusion music” and “new traditional music.”

The lecture is also organized in relation with the six-week workshop, “Get into cheerful janggu rhythm.” For more information on the workshop, see the Korean Cultural Workshop section or visit www.koreanculture.org/arteducation.
