International recognition of the Day of Vesak at the United Nations- 2009

Every year, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of April of the Lunar Calendar is the most sacred to Buddhists. Buddhist monks throughout Asia commemorate on this day the birth of the Buddha, his attainment of enlightenment, and his passing away.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations will be hosting the 2009 UN Vesak Day celebrations on 15 May 2009 in the ECOSOC Chamber from 4:30pm to 7pm. The celebrations will include opening statements, formal religious ceremonies, and cultural performances. The main celebrations will be followed by a reception from 7pm to 8:30pm.
