Parting on Z: Virtual Interactive Puppetry + Pansori
Media artist and Virginia Commonwealth University professor Semi Ryu presents her virtual puppet performance Parting on Z at The Project Room for New Media, Chelsea Art Museum on May 27. This project celebrates and presents Pansori (Korean traditional vocal music) through real-time virtual interactive puppetry that responds to the puppeteer’s voice, walking balance, and fan movements. The Pansori master, Jung-hee Oh, will animate interactively with the virtual puppet that is projected on a large screen in real time. Using interactive devices including a microphone, Nintendo Wii and iPod, Ms. Oh will navigate virtual space, selecting items to activate the puppet’s actions and tag clouds which are semantic maps of her live storytelling. The virtual puppet will face the puppeteer from a distance, speaking back her story in real time mimicry and mirroring her body in swaying motions.
Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 students and seniors, free for Chelsea Art Museum Members. Tickets are only available for purchase at the door, on the day of the performance. For more information, please call 212.255.0719, or visit www.chelseaartmuseum.org, www.semiryu.net
