Guideline for Korean Traditional Musical Instruments / Traditional Performing Arts Costumes Grant Program

Korean Cultural Service New York supports teaching artists or educational institutions which lead Korean traditional music or dance classes by providing Korean traditional musical instruments / traditional performing arts costumes. To apply for instruments or costumes, please read the guidelines and fill out the application form.

Application Guidelines:

  • Eligible applicants are tri-state (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) based educational institutions (K-12 public schools, universities, Korean language schools, etc.) or teaching artists (an artist who teaches and integrates their art form into arts and non-arts curricula) who have been leading classes on Korean traditional music or dance in a school environment for the past three years. Performing arts groups without teaching experience in a school setting (K-12 public schools, universities, Korean language schools, etc.) are not eligible to apply for this grant.

  • Due to the high demand, please note that Korean Cultural Service may not be able to fulfill every request. When filling out the desired numbers of items in the application form, please be honest with your minimum and maximum number of instruments/costumes so that we can gauge our support realistically.

  • Application postmark deadline is November 18, 5PM. All correspondence and application forms should be addressed to

Attn: Performing Arts Manager
Korean Cultural Service New York
460 Park Avenue 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022
Or Fax: (212) 688 8640
Or Email: performingarts@koreanculture.org

  • Selected teaching artists / organizations will be notified individually via telephone or email after the selection process by December 9, 5PM.

  • For the selected grant recipients, requested instruments or costumes will be given on the basis of a yearly lease for free for up to three years. Recipients are required to submit a status report by the end of every year on how the instruments/ costumes have been used and if they wish to renew the lease. Based on the annual report, our office will evaluate whether the rented items have been utilized to the fullest extent and whether or not to grant the renewal. By the end of the three consecutive lease periods, if the recipients still show an active usage on the rented items, Korean Cultural Service will make a permanent donation to the recipients by the end of the third year lease period. For those who didn’t pass the evaluation, the recipient must return the items to Korean Cultural Service by the end of the third year lease period for the next applicant’s use.

  • Damaged items or instruments should be repaired by the recipients at their own expense.

  • Selling or sub-leasing the items for charge to others is strictly prohibited.

  • Please understand that processing the application and ordering instruments and costumes from Korea may take up to several weeks.

  • Korean Cultural Service New York is not responsible for transporting the instruments to your location – all transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the applicant.
