Founded in 1987, NYURI (Rhythmic Impulse at New York University) is a collegiate samulnori group that is dedicated to spreading the art of Korean traditional drums throughout the NYU community and the NYC Metropolitan area. NYURI has performed in many NYU cultural events, Korean traditional holiday festivals, and many more.
This annual performance at the Washington Square Park consists of custom choreographed pieces and several popular samulnori pieces. There are two main playing styles in Samulnori: Sun-ban (선 반, standing half) and Ahn-jeun-ban (앉은 반, sitting half) performances. Sun-ban, usually the first half of the performance, incorporates choreography into instrument playing. Ahn-jeun-ban follows a more conventional performance, where the performers all sit down in a formation.
