Korean Traditional Music Festival 2018 in Philadelphia is co-presented by the NY Korean Traditional Marching Band, Korean School of Southern New Jersey, and the Korean Cultural Center New York as part of KCCNY's Open Stage: Samulnori.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of samulnori, Korean Traditional Music Festival presents the Spirit of Korea, a Korean traditional music and dance festival featuring Kim Duk Soo and Samulnori Hanullim, who performed at the Opening Ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games, and other renowned artists including Chunseung Lee (drummer), Eunjoo Kang (Korean traditional dancer) and Gamin (Korean traditional wind instrument musician).
Experience a rich sampling of Korean arts: chwitadae (marching band), samgomu (three-drum dance), flower basket dance, sword dance, taepyungmu (queen dance), saenghwang (wind instrument made of 17 bamboo pipes), and fan dance, among many others. Through these short acts, audience can even learn aspects of Korean history. As a main attraction, enjoy Kim Duk Soo and Samulnori Hanullim, a quartet of percussive instruments and accompanying dances. The performance will conclude with a chorus stylized with Korean rhythms called “New Heaven and New Earth,” performed by a 100-member choir with the Peace Orchestra which features traditional instruments from several cultures.
