Three outstanding award-winning women choreographers from Korea—Puluem Youn/Youn Puluem Project Group (invisible form), Bo Kyung Lee/BK Dance Project (Human- Pretense) and Jin Ju Song-Begin/Da-On Dance (premiere – As I go)—perform two solos that have traveled the world and one anticipated premiere.

The three women presented on this program are distinctive, exciting, and feral choreographers. This program is guest-curated by Sin Ae Park.

 

CHOREOGRAPHERS

JinJu Song-Begin is the founder and Artistic Director of Da-On Dance, a NYC-based modern dance company. A choreographer and dancer from Korea, her work has been presented in New York City and internationally in Korea, Singapore and Japan. Through the medium of the human body, she questions what goes into sculpting a full life, a human life, a life well-lived. Song-Begin has created Thirst (2013) and Neverend (2015) and Root (2016). She has presented work in New York at FLICfest, Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, The National Academy Museum, 92Y, Movement Research at Judson Church, Dixon Place, Center for Performance Research and more. JinJu holds a Master’s Degree in choreography from Kookmin University and an Undergraduate Degree in Dance from Chung Ang University. Currently she dances in NYC with Tere O’Connor Dance Company, Sean Curran Company and Douglas Dunn + Dancers. JinJu has been chosen to participate in the 2020 Rauschenberg Residency.

Bo Kyung Lee, choreographer, dancer and the artistic director of BK Dance Project, received her PhD degree from the Department of Living Dance and Performing Arts at Hanyang University in Korea. She received the Presidential Prize at the 7th Nagano International Performance Competition, and the 1st award at the International Contest for Mature Contemporary Dance Soloist (FIDCDMX) in Mexico City. Since moving to New York in 2011, Bo Kyung founded her own company, BK dance project which aims to transform people's interests and experiences into an art form through movement and emotion. The company draws on diverse influences and genres of art to better engage the audience. Bo Kyung has presented her works in at the Korea Cultural Center and as part of the following festivals: Bergen PAC Korea Dance Awakening (2014), Going Dutch Festival in Chicago (2015, 2016), 92Y Dig Dance Series Pan Asian Dance Festival (2017), SOAK 2018, Art All Night in Washington, DC (2018) and Fukuoka Fringe Dance Festival (2019). She has taught workshops at Rutgers University (2009), Ithaca College (2011 and 2012), Queens Museum (2015), as well, offered a modern dance class as Lecturer at Ithaca College (2011).

Puluem Youn, the artistic director and choreographer of YounPuluem Project Group, was born and raised in South Korea. From a young age she trained in Korean traditional dance. She graduated from Hansung University and received her MA from Korea National University of the Arts in Seoul, with a concentration in choreography. As a choreographer, she has won many awards including Grand Prix (Group) in Seoul International Choreography Festival 2011 and the top prize in Modern Dance Promotion of Korea in 2012. Her company ‘YounPuluem Project Group’ has performed in numerous festivals and series around the world including, ‘Big Mouth: Pan-Asian Dance 2017’ as a part of the Dig Dance Series at 92Y Harkness Dance Center, ‘D Dance Stages 2016’ Shanghai International Contemporary Dance Festival, ‘West Fest Dance 2015’ at the Martha Graham Studio Theater, ‘Korea Dance Awakening 2014’ at NJ Bergen PAC, ‘Russia Korean Express 2014’ and many more. Youn aims to pursue the aesthetic beauty of space and the relationships of human life. Rather than direct representation, her vision is presented through choreography with a distinctive and clearly realized sensibility.
