Sangjaru is one of South Korea’s most innovative bands, known for creating a fresh sound that blends the energy of Korean folk and traditional music with the infectious rhythms of gypsy swing, funk, rock, and improvisation. The ensemble features Cho Sungyoon on guitar, Gwon Hyochang on janggu (hourglass drum) and kkwaenggwari (small gong), and Nam Seonghun on ajaeng (bowed zither), each performing with elaborate white fluffy headgear, adding a unique touch to their stage presence.

“thunderous, sawed traditional instruments mix with spry Talking Heads-style bass-funk” — The Guardian

Winner of the prestigious Sori Frontier 2019 competition at the Jeonju International Sori Festival, Sangjaru has earned recognition for their exceptional talent and innovative approach to traditional music. The name ‘Sangjaru’ is derived from two Korean words: ‘sangja’ (box) and ‘jaru’ (sack). While a box holds a fixed form, a sack adjusts to its contents. Inspired by this concept, the band seeks to bring fresh creativity to the rich traditions of Korean music.

Artists:
Guitar: Cho Sungyoon
